What do I Wear?

Gotta Dance is a fun place to relax after work, relieve stress, and get some great excersice.

Dress comfortably in something you can move in.

Shoes: Choose shoes that will stay on your feet and not be too heavy or sticky.  Dress shoes with a leather-like sole are ideal.  No sneakers or flip flops, please! Serious dancers wear specialty Ballroom shoes with sued soles. (Yes, you can buy them from us.)

Remember, too that you will be getting up close and personal with other people including your partner, your teacher and other students. Pay special attention to your hygiene, breath and wardrobe when you plan to be dancing. Avoid embarassment by wearing clothing with a conservative cut and sleeves. Dancing can be a bit of a work-out, too. Men should wear an undershirt and everyone needs plenty of anti-perspirant!

Many people love an opportunity to dress up a little for their dance lessons. Ladies will feel feminine and graceful in a skirt and high heels. Gentlemen will look cool and confident in dress slacks and a button down shirt.

What dances can I learn at Gotta Dance?

At Gotta Dance, we specialize in all partner dances. Anything that 2 people dance together in a lead/follow relationship, we can teach. Generally, partner dancing falls into a few major categories, with a lot of bleed over from one to another.

Ballroom
: usually means the classic partner dances. These dances can be learned at the social level or polished and presented for exhibitions or competitions.

Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Rumba, Cha cha, and Swing.

Country
: is especially popular here in Texas. Most people think of Country Western dancing as something you do in bars or dance halls. However, there is also a world wide Country Western dance competition circuit recognizing 8 dances. They are:

2-Step, Triple-Two, East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing, Cha cha, Nightclub, Polka, and Waltz.

Latin
: commonly used to describe any dance from Latin America except Tango.

Rumba, Cha cha, Merengue, Mambo,Salsa, Samba, Bolero.

Club Latin
: The dances you use in Salsa clubs. They include

Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, and Cumbia. Show off at the local clubs or compete at the next Salsa Congress!

Swing:
As one of the most popular styles of dancing, Swing has lots variations and many of them have more than one name.

Jitterbug, Jive, East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing, Texas Push, Hustle, Single-, Double-, and Triple-Time Swing, Lindy Hop, Balboa and Charleston are all popular social and competition styles.

"Dancing is freedom in the sense that it is there if you choose to do it, yet you don't have to dance if you don't want to.  I have always chosen to sit out... to sit out the dance, to stay firmly pressed against the wall, hoping no one saw me or called on me for anything.  I have sat out of life- hoping if I didn't get involved, I wouldn't get hurt, disappointed, or feel not good enough.  Now, I choose to dance.  Life is good, it is a gift and we all should dance every moment we are given... hurt and all. "
